Caledonia, New York
Leonard Ranous, 82, of Caledonia, N.Y., passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on December 26th, 2025. A devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather, and respected former Fire Chief of the Caledonia Fire Department, Leonard lived a life defined by integrity and service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pamela. Together, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and the unwavering patience that became his trademark. To his three children—Jeff Ranous, Janet (Andy) Keenan, and Julie (William) Lovering—he was everything: a fair, ever-present Dad who never missed a game or a milestone; a protector and confidant; and the rock who made life feel safe and calm.
His grandchildren—Justin and Jocelyn Ranous, Jacob Paczkowski, and Andrew and Aileen Keenan—brought him immense joy. He loved their energy, shared endless stories with them, and offered them the same gentle patience he displayed so easily to everyone else.
Leonard lived a life of quiet strength, marked by love for farming and a deep commitment to his community, almost 30 years at Eastman Kodak and finally after retirement followed by driving a school bus for 10 years at his Alma Mater at Caledonia Mumford Central School. Quote “ It was the greatest time of my life, driving the school kids was great.” This gift for "showing up," and his authentic spirit and tender voice inspired every person he touched. As a member of the Caledonia Fire Department for 60 years while working up the ranks to become Fire Chief, he led with loyalty and calm resolve, mentoring fellow firefighters and always putting the needs of others before his own.
In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his brother-in-law William (Vickie) Schneider, sister-in-law Jane Ranous, and his nieces and nephews: Lorie Sauer, Jody Ranous, Molly Fortuna, Meggie Ives, Brian, and Brad Schneider. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Maude Kelly Ranous; his infant sister, Dorothy Ranous; his brother, Donald Ranous; his mother-in-law, Ruth Schneider Green; and his daughter-in-law, Mary Ranous.
