Arlene Jane Williams (Shelton)

–

Caledonia, New York

Arlene Jane Williams was born on June 24, 1931 in the tight-knit community of Caledonia, New York, the daughter of John and Martha Alma Shelton. After graduating from Caledonia-Mumford High School, she worked at various small jobs in Caledonia before moving to Rochester. There she was employed at Bausch and Lomb and General Motors Delco plant as a machine operator.
Arlene married Robert Lee Williams in December 1956. To this union were born two sons: Robert Tracy and the late Gregory Boyd. The couple raised their two sons in the city of Rochester, before moving to Chili, New York.
Arlene was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church in Mumford, New York. Her roles in the church included choir member, church financial secretary, Women's Ministry, Hospitality Committee, and the church anniversaries planning committee. When unable to drive herself, Arlene loved being picked up by her niece, Madeline Burke, so she could attend Sunday services.
She participated in various company bowling and golf leagues before her retirement from Delco in 1991. After retirement Arlene became an avid golfer and she loved golfing with her sister, Betty McClenney, and grandson Ethan, in addition to participating in several golf leagues in the city of Rochester. She was also an active member of Rochester's African American women's gospel choir, AKOMA. Arlene was also a member of the "Sizzling Sisters" Red Hatters Womens' Group. While in the red hatters she was instrumental in arranging a weekend bus tour for the group to travel to Foxwoods Resort & Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut to meet and fellowship with another Red Hatters cohort. Arlene loved to stay busy, but when at home she loved watching golf on tv and Turner Classic Movies.
