Obituary for Phyllis Blanche Shaughnessy (Vokes)

On June 22, 2021 at age 86, Phyllis Blanche Shaughnessy (Vokes) passed away peacefully in Mount Morris, NY surrounded by her loving family. Phyllis was born to Dalton and Elizabeth Vokes (Green) on August 10, 1934 in Batavia, NY. She was raised in Caledonia where she met her husband Thomas Patrick Shaughnessy and the two were married on August 20th, 1955. Together, they raised a loving family of six children in Caledonia. Phyllis spent 15 plus years as Religious Education Coordinator of St. Columba Parish in Caledonia. She enjoyed teaching children about her faith and was loved by her students and fellow teachers. Phyllis was a creative soul who enjoyed writing poetry and keeping a journal. She authored a novel, a book of poems, many Caledonia Variety Shows and the yearly Shaughnessy Family Picture Album, enjoyed by all each Christmas. She enjoyed her gardens, crafts, and music. Phyllis lovingly supported and cared for Tom who had MS for 50 years. She would say her most precious gift was her family and she never missed an opportunity to let them know how loved they were. Phyllis and Tom bought a home on Conesus Lake and hosted many parties there for family and friends. Phyllis exuded thoughtfulness, kindness and an unending capacity to enjoy life to the fullest. She will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by her children Kathleen (Timothy) Wahl, Thomas (Pamela) Shaughnessy, Patrick (Deborah) Shaughnessy, Michael (Victoria) Shaughnessy, Patricia (Robert) States, and Daniel (Andrea) Shaughnessy; grandchildren Colleen (William), Patrick (Chelsea), Mary Grace (Brendan), Charles, Heather (Luca), John, Benjamin, Avary (Kris), Samantha (Michael), Kristen, Nicole, Evan (Kiera), Erin (Kevin), Emma, Molly, Julia, and Nadia; great-grandchildren Brian, Ryder, Logan, Caroline and Kingsley; brother James (Jean) Vokes; special relation Nick Crowley and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Dalton and Elizabeth Vokes (Green) and in-laws Thomas and Florence Shaughnessy (Carney); sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Elizabeth and Harold Simm, Mary and Howard Bunn, Patricia and Gerald Pheilshifter, Ann and Robert Smith and Hazel Shaughnessy; nieces and nephews Florence Simm Naylor , Howard “Rusty” Bunn, Mary “Cathy” Parsons, David Bunn and Greg Legler.

Friends may call Thursday, July 1st, 2021from 4-7 P.M. at Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 W. Main St., Caledonia. Her funeral mass will be held Friday at 10 A.M. on July 2, 2021 at St. Martin De Porres Parish, St. Columba Church,198 North Street, Caledonia. Interment will be held at St. Columba Cemetery. To honor Phyllis who loved bright colors and hats, please arrive in colorful attire for the wake and funeral. Ladies are asked to wear a cheery hat to the funeral. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Focus on the Children, P.O. Box 31, Caledonia, NY 14423.
