Obituary
Caledonia
Passed away peacefully on January 9, 2021 at age 88. Predeceased by her parents Grace and Robert Mitchell, her husband Jerome (Jerry), and her brothers Robert and Richard.
Phyllis is survived by her son Kenneth (Cherie) Snyder, and her daughters Bonnie Whiteside and Dale (Jerry) Curry, grandchildren: Jason, Michael, and Daniel Snyder; Thomas, Ashley, and Bradley (Stacie) Whiteside; Sarah (James) Franklin and Molly Curry, great-grandchildren: Ryan and McKenna Snyder; Paisley and Connor Whiteside; Peyton and Liana Franklin; Reagan Bukowski; Alex Craft; Greyson and Quinn Thomas-Saltsman; and Great-great-grandson Bentley Snyder.
Phyllis grew up in Caledonia, and attended York Central School, graduating in the class of 1950. She married Jerry Snyder in October 1951 and bought a home on Middle Road, where they raised their three children. Phyllis worked as a receptionist in the Caledonia dental office of Dr. Clancy, as a waitress at Star Diner (now Peppermints) in Avon, and later at Chloride Electro Networks in Caledonia. She was a longtime member of the Caledonia Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, spending many summer weekends marching in parades and working at the annual Firemen’s Carnival. Every summer she and her family would vacation at the Thousand Islands, with Phyllis often piloting the boat for the water skiers.
After Jerry’s untimely passing in 1994, she had a smaller home built next to their old family home on Middle Road. Phyllis enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and loved her cats and dogs – who can forget Snoopy! She spent a lifetime doing crafts – making bead jewelry, knitting, leather working, sewing, ceramics – and enjoyed making and displaying holiday decorations, especially for Halloween and Christmas. Phyllis spent the last eight years of her life at the skilled nursing facility in Mt. Morris in a wheelchair, but still kept making crafts and working her magic growing plants. She lived a long, happy life, and she’ll be missed by all. We love you Mom, Grandma, GG, and Great-Great-Gram!
