Obituary

Elizabeth Anne Merritt, 85 years young, resident of The Hurlbut in Rochester, NY died when she contracted the COVID-19 virus while in a lockdown, no visitor situation. Diagnosed on Wednesday, April 8th, she passed away on Monday, April 13th, 2020.

Anne, as she preferred to be called, is survived by her children Davy and MaryAnn Merritt of Caledonia, NY., George and Jocelyn Merritt of Bastrop, Texas, Andrew and Christine Merritt of Port Matilda, PA, and Sally and Jon Braciak of Buffalo, NY. Anne was predeceased by her husband George, and her daughter, Holly Merritt-Teed. She was also predeceased by both her sister Joyce (Randall) King, and her brother, George (Betsy) Davy.

Anne is survived by her 8 grandchildren, Jenea Rychlicki, Caledonia, Stash (Charlene) Merritt of Macedon, Melanie (Jason) Mullins of Bastrop, TX., Stephany (David) Moore of Alexandria, Virginia, Kristin (Christopher) Trewer of Mumford, Haylee Teed of Rochester, Katie Merritt of Harrisburg, PA and Sarah Merritt, Port Matilda, PA., and also 10 great grandchildren. She has nieces and nephews that she adored.
Anne was a passionate liberal who never missed a vote. She loved her cats, kids, grandkids, and great grands. She was a city girl who married a country boy and together they raised 5 children in a large brick home in the Town of Wheatland. She worked for the Rochester Telephone Company, Scottsville Pharmacy, and spent many years working for Jack Miller at Miller’s Sand and Gravel in Wheatland.

Anne enjoyed rescuing feral cats, bingo, her friends at the Wheatland Senior Center, lunches with her friends at the Alexandria Bay Senior Center and the fierce competition of dominoes at Gordon Court in Alex Bay. She touched many lives, would help anyone in need and was a faithful Episcopalian who looked forward to reuniting with her family when she passed. If you wish to honor her, in lieu of flowers, please do something nice for someone else. A church service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family when this crazy world settles down and allows us to gather.

I am so thankful to have gotten to know Anne during her time at Woodcrest. She rarely missed a craft or bingo and I personally would handle her order on omelette day. I’ll never forget the day someone else tried and handed her an omelette with garnishes on it, and from that day forward I made sure to handle it myself. It was our thing. I enjoyed her stories and her opinions on the goings on. I’m so sad that her final days were without her family whom she loved so much and talked about all the time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this unprecedented time. Cherish those memories and know that you have one heck of a guardian angle looking over you now.

Sally (Jon), Andy (Christine), Davy (MaryAnn) & George (Jocelyn) your Mother holds such a deep spot in my heart. I am truly heartbroken on the loss of your Mother. My thoughts and prayers to you all in this very difficult time.
I am so thankful for the visit I had with her and Sally a few months ago. Anne was my second Mother & is so loved & greatly missed. I grew up with Sally going to the Strand Theater and then onto the cottage on the lake. Today, I still sail out and sit in front of the cottage and remember the fun times there. We would take the bus to Midtown, go to the Racetrack and so many more places that hold such wonderful memories. We would spend the summer selling fruit & veggies out in front. The Army bus was the best! Cannot forget the lot cars, black van or the red Toyota pickup. I would catch Anne and the "Bowerman Babes" at Wegmans on Fridays just to see her. I am so truly blessed for having her in my life!! Always in my heart! Truly an Angel!
Tracy
