Guendolen Stuart Smith
CALEDONIA: Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, teacher, librarian, church leader, and friend passed peacefully away on September 15, 2019, at the Friendly Home, Rochester, New York. She was 92 years old. Born in Worcester, MA, Guen was the daughter of Raymond and Viola Stuart. She moved to western New York to attend Houghton College and graduated in 1949. She later received her Library Science degree from the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Also in 1949, Guen wed Howard Frederick Smith, Jr. in Pike, New York. They were married
54 years until her beloved husband’s passing in 2003. She was also predeceased by her brother- in-law, James G. Smith, and daughter in-law, Patricia Smith. Guen is survived by her loving family, including children: Curtis (Sarah) Smith, Russell Smith, Carolyn (Gary) Goble,
Karen (Zachary) Bogart, and Brian (Deanna) Smith, thirteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother and sister in-law Charles and Jeannette Stuart, sister-in-law Doris Smith, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Guen’s life was one of commitment to family, God, and community. She was a devoted mother, educator, and church leader. As a mother, she encouraged and modeled life-long learning. She cultivated a love for cooking, baking, music, gardening, and traveling. She also enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren including “UNO”. In her role as educator, Guen was a public school teacher and librarian for 25 years. She worked in the Rushford, Byron-Bergen, and
Rush-Henrietta school systems where she relished the opportunity to foster children's and young adults’ knowledge. She served the First Presbyterian Church of Caledonia as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study participant, and Women’s Circle member. She also worked on numerous church advancements including the Organ Fund, the church library, and the purchase of the Connor House, home of the “Source of Success” program.

Friends may call Friday, November 15, 2019, 4-6 pm, at the Alhart Funeral Home, 3068 Main Street, Caledonia.
