Obituary for James R. "Jim" Phillips

Jim was born on 4/4/1944 passed away on 8/4/2016 in the comfort of his home. Jim was predeceased by his parents Verda and Raymond Phillips and sister Carolyn Ostrander. He is survived by his wife and best friend Elke Phillips; brother Dan (Faye) Phillips; his daughter Tina (John Miller) Preston and young Sydney; Elke’s son Thomas (Jennifer Brandon) Pound; brother-in-law William (Bill) Ostrander, and nieces Kimberly (Scott) MacLean and Kristen (Rod) Carpenter, and their extended families. Jim left behind many dear friends in the Caledonia-Mumford area and beyond too numerous to mention. The family is grateful for the good care Jim received from Dr. Mohamedtaki A. Tejani and his team and all of the staff and volunteers at Wilmot Cancer Center. The family is also grateful for the in-home hospice care Jim received from Lifetime Care.

Jim was born in Windber, PA. He was a graduate of Richland Township High School, Johnstown, PA, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering. As a Vietnam-Era Veteran of the US Navy he was a very active member of the Caledonia War Veterans Memorial and American Legion Post #255. After his retirement from General Motors he, along with his wife Elke, became volunteers in various other not-for-profit organizations. Jim was named Citizen of the Year by the Caledonia-Mumford Lions Club in 2011. Jim loved the game of golf. He was a member of the Caledonia CC for over 20 years before joining the Stafford CC.
There will be no prior calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 8th, at 3:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 3080 Main Street, Caledonia, NY. Golfing attire preferred. Interment private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Focus on the Children, P. O. Box 31, Caledonia, NY 14423, Big Springs Historical Society, 3095 Main Street, Caledonia, NY 14423, or a charity of your choice.
